Round 2: Denn 1-11 Cuchulainns 2-07
Cuchulainns took the short tirp to Crosskeys on Saturday evening last for Rnd 2 of the ACFL Div. This was a re-arranged with the kind concession of the visitors to accommodate the rededication of St. Matthew’s Church in Drumavaddy. After a hard fought 60 minutes the home side emerged with a victory. Played in cold but dry conditions on a good sod, the home side raced into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead after the first quarter with the goal coming from Padraig McGovern, who also contributed a point to add to scores from Fergal Farrelly and Dean Hyland (free). Cuchulainns sole response came from the boot of Gavin Daly. Far from being overawed Cuchulainns fought gallantly in the second quarter to tie the scores as the teams went in for the half time break. Score 1-5 each, the Cuchulainns goal coming from a high ball into the Denn square finished by Aoghan Daly, and points from team-mates Rory O' Connell, Conor Smith and Shane Smith and a free from Seamus Clarke, whilst Denn Replied with points from Hubert Smith and a fine effort from wing back Stephen McPartland.
Denn opened the scoring in the second half with a Dean Hyland free, followed quickly by a point from Martin Cahill. However these were quickly cancelled out by similar scores by Rory O' Connell and a free from Seamus Clarke. Padraig McGovern nudged the home side ahead again before Feargal Farrelly and two Dean Hyland free’s put Denn 3 up. Denn were rocked back on their heels though when Gary Daly calmly despatched a penalty past Brian Boylan to put the team’s level with 3 mins to play. Denn emerged victorious however with a late free from Feargal Farrelly to claim the spoils.
